Seville Landmarks and Seville Monuments (Seville, Spain)
It is hardly surprising that the important and prominent city of Seville is full of many spectacular monuments and landmarks, many of which were built for the famous Seville Expo held in 1929. Some of these monuments date back hundreds of years and are in remarkable condition. Here are some of the top Seville landmarks to visit.
Seville Landmarks: Monasterio de Santa María de las Cuevas - Isla de la Cartuja, Seville, 41071, Spain
Tel: +34 95 448 0611
Seville's large Monasterio de Santa María de las Cuevas was founded in 1400 and built by the Carthusians. During his life, Columbus stayed and worked here and was at one stage even buried here. Carthusian monks lived in this monastery complex until 1836 and shortly after they left, a large ceramics factory was built on the site. After many years of successful production, the factory finally closed in 1980 and the monastery was then completely restored in time for Seville's 1992 Exposition. Highlights include the Capilla de Afuera by the main gate, the Casa Prioral, which features an exhibition about the restoration of the monastery, a Mudejar cloister with frequent exhibitions of art and a nearby chapter house, with many splendid marble tombs. The monastery is easy to reach by bus and is located in the Isla de la Cartuja area of Seville. Guided tours are available.
